Why is this upgrade needed?

Much of the existing equipment at Chickerell Substation has been in place since the 1960s and is nearing the end of its operational life. This upgrade will modernise the site, improve safety, and ensure the network is ready to meet future energy demands.

Will this affect my electricity supply?

There are no planned interruptions to electricity supplies during the works. If any short outages become necessary, we’ll provide advance notice to all affected customers.

    What are the environmental impacts?

All works are being carried out under strict environmental management protocols. Full environmental and structural assessments have been completed to ensure minimal impact on the surrounding area.

Will there be noise or disruption?

Most of the work is taking place within the substation itself, so disruption will be minimal. However, residents near the site may notice some construction traffic and occasional noise during working hours. If anything changes, we’ll provide advance notice of any particularly disruptive activity.

Are there any road closures or traffic impacts?

No road closures are planned. Construction access routes have been agreed with local authorities to minimise traffic disruption.

Is this project related to the nearby battery storage site?

No – this project is not being delivered on behalf of any specific development, including the nearby battery storage site. It is part of a wider programme to upgrade the electricity network across South-West Dorset, ensuring it is resilient, reliable, and ready to meet future demand.

As part of this programme, we are also delivering two customer connection projects that will link new developments to the upgraded network. These are separate from the core infrastructure works and follow their own planning and regulatory processes.

Overall, this investment will benefit the entire region, improving service for existing customers and enabling future connections for homes, businesses, and low-carbon technologies.

How long will the project take?

Work is scheduled to begin in June 2025 and continue through to mid-2028. We’ll keep the community updated on key milestones throughout the project.

    How can I stay informed?

    We’ll be communicating through:

    • Letters to local residents
    • Updates on our Events page
    • Community drop-in sessions
