What are we doing?
We’re working with our contractor OCU to carry out essential upgrades to further improve the local electricity network supplying homes and businesses around South Elgin.
This essential project will see teamsupgrading our Cumming Street and Bilbohallsubstations, and a new underground cable will be installed between the two sites.
Why are we upgrading this part of the network?
Cumming Street and Bilbohall substations already deliver power 24/7 to over 6,000 properties, and this project will make supplies even more reliable all year round. And by increasing network capacity - adding more “space” on the local grid - we’re helping to meet the increased demand for EV chargers and heat pumps; this extra capacity is also key to supporting the expansion of new housing and other developments in the city.
Temporary traffic lights will be in place at the sections where work is taking place – a measure designed to ensure the safety of both road-users and the installation teams.
We recognise that the traffic lights can sometimes cause slight delays to people’s day-to-day routines, they’re in place for everyone’s safety. We would like to thank for road users for their patience and care while these essential upgrades are carried out. Please use this information to plan ahead for journeys and factor in more time if required.
Where are we working?
Cumming Street Substation Civils & Substation Works
The project includes switchroom refurbishment, new foundations, earthing upgrades, cable trench extensions, fire detection improvements, electrical and CCTV upgrades, new GIS installation.
Bilbohall Substation Civils & Transformer Installation Works
Installation of new 33/11kV transformer and equipment, upgrading existing drainage, compound extension, security fencing, new lighting, CCTV and access control installation.
33kV Cable Installation from Cumming Street to Bilbohall
Installation of 2.4km of underground of 33kV and associated fibre optic cable between both substations involving multiple utility and road crossings, reinstatement works, joint bays and cable chambers.
Approximately 400m of the proposed cable route runs though the Wards Wildlife Site Area and will be subject to archaeological and ecological regulations to ensure we minimise any potential disruption to local wildlife.
Overhead Line Works
Installation of two terminal H-Pole structures and one span each of HDCu and AFL Fibre Access Wrap at the Network Rail railway line crossing.
