Our specialist subsea team is currently working on plans to replace the submarine electricity cables across Loch A’Choire - an essential infrastructure upgrade that will ensure the ongoing reliability of electricity supplies to our customers.

These works are part of our ongoing commitment to ensuring the best possible performance of the vital subsea electricity infrastructure across Scotland’s islands and coastal communities.
With the existing submarine cables across Loch A’Choire approaching the end of their operational lifespan, their replacements are an essential upgrade to support the ongoing energy demands of the area and maintain the resilience of the local electricity network.
This project is still at the planning stage, and we hope to be in a position to start work in Summer 2025, subject to all statutory licensing requirements.
What is involved in the cable replacement project?
This project involves the installation of two new high voltage subsea cables across a defined route beneath the loch. The existing cables, which have served the local community for many years, will be safely decommissioned once the new infrastructure is operational.
Why is the cable replacement project needed?
Upgrading the network in this way is essential to ensure the continued security of the energy supply to the surrounding communities, and we take a proactive approach to replacing subsea cables such as these, to avoid unnecessary issues and potential outages.
What are the benefits?
Enhanced reliability: Replacing the aging submarine cables will strengthen the security of the electricity supply for communities connected to the network between Loch A’Choire and Kilmalieu.
Future-proofing the service: The new cables are designed to accommodate current and future energy demands, and will remain operational for decades.
Minimal disruption: The project will be carried out with minimal disruption to customers, ensuring continuity of service during the installation process and delivering a reliable electricity supply for years to come.
Environmental stewardship: We are committed to ensuring the replacement cables are installed with the least possible environmental impact, working with key stakeholders such as NatureScot and RSPB to protect the marine ecosystem throughout the project.
