Project Overview

SSEN Distribution is developing proposals to reinforce the electricity network between Abernethy and Milnathort as part of ongoing investment in the local electricity infrastructure. The project is intended to improve network resilience, increase operational flexibility and help maintain a secure electricity supply for customers across the area.

The proposed works involve the installation of two new 33kV cable circuits between Abernethy Grid Supply Point (GSP) and Milnathort Primary Substation, together with associated upgrades at both locations.

Why is the Project Needed?

The existing network requires reinforcement to support a reliable and resilient electricity supply both now and in the future. The proposed investment will help improve network performance, provide greater flexibility during fault conditions and planned maintenance, and strengthen the overall security of supply in the area.

What is involved in the Abernethy to Milnathort project?

Current proposals include:

  • Installation of two new 33kV cable circuits between Abernethy GSP and Milnathort Primary Substation.
  • Installation of a new six-panel 33kV switchboard at Milnathort Primary Substation.
  • Network modifications to enable alternative routing of electricity supplies during fault conditions.
  • Installation of approximately 1km of new 33kV overhead line and associated switching equipment.
  • Installation of shunt reactor equipment required to support the operation of the new cable circuits, likely to be located within the Abernethy GSP site.
  • Installation of 33kV feeders approximately 20km in length with associated shunt reactors 2.5MVAr in size per cable.

What impact will this have on local communities

We are committed to providing timely updates, sharing information about upcoming works and responding to any questions or concerns from residents, businesses and stakeholders. Community Information Events and project updates will provide opportunities to meet the project team and learn more about the proposed works.

What are the Benefits?

The proposed network reinforcement is expected to:

  • Improve network resilience and reliability.
  • Enhance operational flexibility.
  • Support future electricity demand in the area.
  • Help maintain a secure and dependable electricity supply for local customers.

What will be the environmental impact of the project?

As part of the project planning process, our team conduct rigorous environmental assessments and surveys to ensure that environmental sustainability is at the heart of all the work we undertake.

We work with key stakeholders including SEPA, NatureScot, Historic Environment Scotland, Perth and Kinross Council and Fife Council to implement appropriate mitigation.

Our environmental teams work closely with our site engineers and construction operatives to ensure that everyone is aware of their responsibilities to protect our natural assets whilst undertaking their work. As part of this project, we are committed to improving the environment and achieving biodiversity net gain.

Keeping You Informed

The project remains in development, and details may be refined as engineering and environmental assessments progress. We will continue to engage and provide regular updates to local communities and stakeholders as plans are developed.
