We are working in Southampton to deliver a £10 million re-cabling scheme that will provide a modern and more resilient electricity network in the area.
What work is being delivered on Thomas Lewis Way?
From 15 March 2026, our delivery partner, Clancy, will be carrying out essential upgrades to the electricity network on our behalf. The work will involve installing additional electrical cables in the carriageway along the southern end of Thomas Lewis Way. Works will begin at the junction with Portswood Road and continue south to the junction at Horseshoe Bridge. We expect the works to be completed by July 2026.
This project forms part of the wider £155 million investment in Southampton, designed to strengthen the local electricity network and ensure it can cope with severe weather events and increasing demand. This work will also help to:
To ensure the safety of both our teams and road users, a contraflow traffic management system will be in place during the works. This will help reduce disruption and keep traffic flowing wherever possible. In addition, we will be working in sections of approximately 100m at a time to lessen the impact on road users. Pedestrian access will remain unaffected throughout the duration of the work.
To install the contraflow system, a full overnight closure of Thomas Lewis Way will be required on 15th March 2026, from 20:00 to 6:00. By carrying out this work overnight we can minimise disruption during peak travel hours. Key dates during this period can be found below.

Working with our communities
The nature of these works means that traffic management will be necessary. These measures will be carefully planned in partnership with local authorities, and residents and businesses in the surrounding area will be notified in advance.
We understand that this work may cause some disruption and noise. However, using industry best practice, our contractors will do everything possible to minimise inconvenience. Please look out for our maintenance signs on the road network for the latest information, including diversion routes.
