Skye - Uist network upgrade

The Skye to South Uist project represents a significant investment in the energy future of the Western Isles.

SSEN Distribution Large Capital Delivery team will be progressing this major infrastructure initiative aimed at strengthening and improving the reliability of the energy supply to the Uist Islands.

This will involve the installation of a replacement submarine electricity cable between South Uist and Skye, delivering enhanced energy security and resilience to the Western Isles.

This crucial project will develop the network to integrate the replacement cable with an onshore connection which is to be established at Milovaig and chart an appropriate route through Glendale to connect with the substation at Dunvegan. By upgrading the network in this way, we are laying the groundwork for a more resilient, sustainable, and secure electricity supply that will benefit local communities for generations to come.

What does the network upgrade involve? 

The project involves the installation of new 33kV cable between South Uist and Dunvegan substation and associated upgrades to the existing network infrastructure to accommodate the improved infrastructure.

What are the key environmental considerations? 

Comprehensive environmental assessments are being carried out in advance of any construction work progressing to ensure that all works can progress with minimal impact on the surrounding marine and coastal environments.

What is the anticipated impact on the community?

By upgrading and reinforcing the network, we aim to support local communities, enable future growth, and facilitate a Just Transition to a low-carbon, clean energy system for the surrounding area.

This upgrade will reduce the risk of power outages for homes and businesses in South Uist and nearby areas, ensuring a consistent and dependable electricity supply, whilst increasing the capacity enough to support the expected growth in commercial and domestic green energy due to the use of Solar Panels, Heat Pumps and EV Charging Points.

Why is this important for the future energy security of local communities?

By enhancing the electrical infrastructure and increasing the capacity of the local network we will also enable better integration of renewable energy generation, helping local communities contribute to a cleaner, greener energy future.

How was the proposed route for the cable selected?

In order to determine the most appropriate route for the replacement cable to integrate with the network on land via the Dunvegan Substation, a variety of network and feasibility assessments were conducted. Following engagement with the community earlier in 2024, the land works phase of the project will involve installing underground cable.

How will we keep you informed as the project progresses? 

While we are working in the area, we are committed to keeping the local communities on Skye and Uist updated on the work we have planned. Further to the initial community information event held in Glendale in June 2024, we will be hosting a series of community information sessions to provide updates on our progress and capture feedback.

We also engage with a range of key stakeholders such as NatureScot and the Scottish Fishermen’s Federation as well as other environmental groups and government bodies to ensure the project aligns with both regional needs and broader environmental goals.
